Citrus College Cosmetology Program Receives National Service Award

March 2010
Glendora, Calif. – The Citrus College Cosmetology Program has been named to the 2009 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement.
The program was acknowledged because of its involvement with four specific events: Foothill Unity Center’s Back to School Event, the Fred Jordan Mission’s Mother’s Day event , the Fred Jordan Mission’s Back to School Clothing Drive, and the program’s “Night of Mystical Dreams” hair show, which was a fundraiser for breast cancer research.
Every spring, senior students in the Cosmetology Program visit the mission for Mother’s Day and provide haircuts and manicures for the women on Skid Row. In addition, every fall approximately 60 students visit the Mission to assist with a back to school clothing drive.
“Being named to the President’s Community Service Honor Roll is a wonderful achievement and Citrus College is extremely honored,” said Trustee Gary Woods, the president of the Citrus Community College District Board of Trustees. “Of course, our true reward is the knowledge that the college’s faculty, staff, and students have contributed to the improvement of local communities by tackling some of the most persistent challenges that society faces.”
