:: The Runner (Rudolph) Part 2 ::

Yesterday, I started telling you the story of the amazing Wilma Rudolph… who, despite her physical disability, had the incredible notion that she would like to be the world’s greatest woman runner.

When Wilma entered Tennessee State University, Coach Temple saw something incredible… he saw that she not only had enormous natural talent, but she believed she could be the world’s best.

With his training, she went to the Olympic Games. There she was pitted against the greatest woman runner of the day, a German girl named Jutta Heine, who had never been beaten. But Wilma beat her in the 100-meter dash. She beat Jutta again in the 200-meters.

Finally came the 400-meter relay. The first two runners on Wilma’s team made a perfect handoff of the baton. But when the third runner handed the baton to Wilma, she dropped it, and Jutta took off down the track. No one could catch this runner. But Wilma did just that, earning her third Olympic gold medal. What a story of the human spirit! This is the spirit our staff exhibits everyday at the Fred Jordan Missions as they fight nearly insurmountable odds of poverty and hunger. You can do the same by helping us feed hungry families.
