How does God define success?

In America, there’s much to do about success. The media, businesses, even our schools praise those who have achieved. Yet what is success in God’s eyes? Senator Mark Hatfield tells the story of a trip he made to Calcutta to visit Mother Teresa. She took him to see sick, dying children. He witnessed the poor who line up by the hundreds to receive medical attention.

Hatfield was overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of the suffering. “How can you bear the load without being crushed by it?” he asked.

Mother Teresa replied, “My dear Senator, I am not called to be successful, I am called to be faithful.”

Having ministered to hurting souls at Fred Jordan Mission for more than half a century, I can surely understand Mother Teresa. The needs on Skid Row are often so great that I wonder how we will help all those hungry, homeless people.

Yet I believe… and out of that belief, I act. And God has always met my needs, by touching the hearts of good people like you to provide the funds for food, clothing, shelter, and so much more.
