:: Jennifer's Story ::

The Mission “grants” a young woman’s dream

My name is Jennifer and I just turned 19. One of my first memories is going to Fred Jordan Mission’s weekly services.

For over 15 years, my family and I have been going to the Mission on Fridays for a Spanish church service. At the service, they give us clothing, food bags, hygiene products, and my favorite, big bags of fresh produce!  The Mission even gave us diapers when I was a baby.

The Mission also tutored me at the Jordan Youth Academy until I graduated from high school two years ago. They read to me when I was a child, helped me with my homework as I got older, and even taught me how to use computers.

At the Mission I realized that I love learning.

That’s why I went right back to school at Cerritos Community College in Norwalk when I graduated from high school.

I decided that I wanted to become a court stenographer, so I enrolled in a three year stenography program. It is hard to go to school sometimes, because I also have to work to help my family. I just completed my 2nd year, and I can’t wait to graduate to get a better job so that I can help my family even more!

My family still goes to the Mission every week for clothing and food, and my brother, Francisco, and my sister, Nicole, still go to the Jordan Youth Academy.

The Mission was there for us during our hardest times.

My father recently lost his job as a mechanic, so times have been very difficult. Without the Mission’s help I don’t know what we would do.  When my father lost his job I was very scared, because my program requires me to buy my own stenograph machine. They cost around $5,000! I talked to the Mission and they helped me get a grant to buy a brand new stenograph machine. With this machine, I can get a better job and earn more money for my family.

There is no area of our lives that the people at the Mission have not touched. We thank God for them and for the countless donors who make their help possible. God bless you!
